Your Host

Hi, I am Shoten. I am a priest at Enpukuji and I am also a farmer in the surrounding area. I love trying new things such as planning events at the temple and inviting people to experience farming. I want to make this trip as enjoyable as possible so join me to explore both farm and temple.

Before setting off, you'll meet our friendly interpreter at 12:15PM. You'll be escorted into the countryside outside of Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture to reach a temple named “Enpukuji”. Once we arrive at the temple, you'll meet with your local host who will guide you for the rest of the afternoon. Your host is a priest and also a farmer, so he will show you the rare integration of nature and the temple. His knowledge in both Buddhism and farming will give you an interesting insight into both aspects.

For 3-4 hours you'll participate in an array of activities at the temple, like zen meditation, exploring the surrounding woodlands, pounding rice cake, and more. The host loves interacting with people who visit his temple, and he will share many stories such as the meaning behind different aspects of the temple, the importance of nature as it blends with temple life, and many more. With a translator on staff it will be easy for you to follow along and join the conversation!
