“Tokyo Washi” may be a small organization with only three members, but we have passion for what we do. All the materials for the Japanese paper, or “washi”, are locally sourced. We are dedicated to showing the world the versatility of washi. Not only do we “make” the paper, but also “grow”, “eat”, and “enjoy” it, and we put a great importance on these four points. Edible washi is a one of a kind experience only we provide. The moving style of paper making is also our specialty. Although our organization is new, we have confidence that our passion for the craft shows. Washi making in Tokyo has a long history, and we are dedicated to preserving that history and bringing new elements to it as well.

Full profile

Dive into the world of washi and book making! In this workshop you’ll make your own washi paper shrine stamp book (“Goshuin”), which you can use to remember all your shrine and temple visits. Collecting the unique and ornate stamp marks is an increasingly popular temple hopping activity. This workshop is also a truly rare opportunity to learn how beautiful washi paper is made. The whole experience last about five hours, with two hours dedicated to learning about washi paper and the actual book making process. The remaining three hours is for touring the Seven Lucky Gods’ shrines around Shinjuku. You should expect a lot of walking, with with the full shrine route lasting about 7km (4.3 miles), so it is not recommended for small children. If you wish, you are welcome to take a taxi, however, this is not included in the tour price. The workshop is accessible from Shinjuku station on the Seibu Line and can accommodate up to six people.

I immersed myself to make Japanese Washi, in another word- paper making. Learning to make paper in very ancient way is another way I experience Japanese culture and norms. The Host is very experience Washi maker and I had a chance to go through the process and finally Made a Goshuin Book. I kept this book as a souvenir to show to my family as well as remembrance of the Japan trip. Highly recommended for anyone intrested in making Goshuin book and collect few stamps from temples as memories. Thank you once again Tabica for the Tour. It was a tour to remember.See moreSee less
