YOUR HOST

Junko SUZUKI

This tour is led by two spirited ladies. We may come from different backgrounds but we share a common bond in our passion for kimono. First, I am Yui Michael. I have worked professionally as a kimono artist for eight years, so I possess an in-depth knowledge of the proper way to wear a kimono. I am eager to share this knowledge with you, and hope to show you how you can freshen up your look easily by donning "casual" kimono in your daily life. Guided by the same desire to spread the appeal of kimono, I, Junko Suzuki, found a natural ally in Yui. I wanted to enrich my soul, so I not only moved house to Shitamachi, but I also found work there in 2014. I just love soaking up the atmospheric vibes evoked by this old part of Tokyo and was inspired to marry my two great interests - fashion and old Japan - together, and thus our tour was born. With our combined expertise, we promise to let you feel attractive and authentically Japanese in a way that other tours cannot offer!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Alight at Oshiage Station and head over to Mukojima in Sumida Ward, just a stone's throw away. Be prepared to have an enthralling and enlightening adventure there from 1-4pm, rain or shine. First off you will be immersed in the kimono world, as your hosts delight you with trendy designs and show you how to wear them fuss-free. They will also advise you on how you can use kimono as a fashion statement to express your feelings for a particular day. Next strut your stuff in your "casual" kimono and explore the nostalgic streets of Shitamachi, where you can still catch a glimpse of what life was like in old Japan. An awesome way to escape from busy downtown Tokyo for a while! We definitely encourage repeat participants, for no one tour is like another. In spring, you can savour the beauty of radiant sakura (cherry blossom) whereas summer enables you to get up close with quaint local omatsuri (festivals), where you get to feel the residents' energy and dynamism first-hand!

  • Meet your host

You'll meet up with your hosts, Junko and Yui, at their communication space and charity shop "Engawa Sumid". Introduce yourselves and learn the plan for the day.

  • Choose your favorite kimono

Select the kimono you would like to wear. There's plenty of different styles to choose from!

  • Learn how to wear a kimono

Junko and Yui will dress you in a kimono, explaining the steps along the way.

  • Take a stroll through the town

Once you're dressed, it's time to go out and strut your stuff!

  • Visit the nearby shopping street

Enjoy the downtown scenery and wander through a traditional Japanese shopping street. You'll also be able to get some great photos with the Tokyo Skytree!

  • Take a break with some tea and sweets

It's time for a rest after all that walking. Sit down with your hosts for a lovely chat and enjoy some Japanese tea and sweets. (This is all included in the tour price.)

There were two hosts. I was surprised that one of them can speak fluent English. Both of them were really friendly, prepared and well informed/skilled about the content of the tour.; It was definitely a great experience! I've been in Japan for a while, but this was something new and outstanding. First, we chose kimonos of our choice and we were guided through steps of how to put it on by ourselves. It was harder than I thought :D Luckily, the host was really nice, helpful and English speaking. I was surprised how creative she was with different variations of bows, accessories, and colors. We went outside and walked around the beautiful Oshiage. The hosts were mixing a casual conversation with a detailed description of the main spots in the area. Big bridge, Sumida River, local narrow streets, and Geisha stories mixed with their personal memories. We also had a chance to talk to local people from the stores and stopped by Wagashi shop for tea and sweets. It gave me a home-like feeling. Later on, we had a chance to make a wish, take pictures and walk around local temples. It was an amazing day. Thank you very much!See moreSee less

The idea to introduce less known aspects of Japan in a hands-on manner is quite attractive. Viewing and experiencing the country from the perspective of the locals should help give visitors a much better understanding of Japan and its people.See moreSee less
