Hiroshi IWAI

My name is Iwai Hiroshi. I’ve been a middle school health and physical education teacher for 32 years, and I’m also a qualified disaster prevention educator. I’m particularly proud of my achievements in teaching pole-vaulting, and I also love to cook maki rice! I became interested in disaster prevention and reduction after we experienced a 3.1 earthquake, and had to take refuge in the school for two nights. A fight broke out between students, and I realised that the level of survival education was not supporting them in this difficult time as much as it could be. No one likes to think that a disaster may happen, but having the skills to confront one can make a big difference. Here in our beautiful Japan, we are not strangers to natural disasters, and I believe that true preparedness — the sure knowledge of what to do in the event of a sudden disaster — is key not only to our personal survival, but also to the overall well-being and mental fortitude of everybody, in and out of a crisis. I’d like to help train everybody, from grade school-age upwards, in what to do in the event of a natural disaster, how to cope, and how to survive well. If we all understand what to do in challenging times, the strength and cohesion within our groups will help us all to get through anything, together. Please join me!

Full profile

Natural disasters are a struggle for anyone affected, and we all hope that we will never experience one ourselves. Should you ever find yourself in such a difficult and extraordinary situation, preparedness and knowing how to survive in adverse conditions can make a big difference to your life, and to the people around you. However, learning the skills that will prepare you can certainly be fun — and delicious! This unusual and important “evacu-camping” experience is like a camping trip, with a difference. Just an hour away from Yachiyo city center, in Chiba Prefecture, you can learn the skills that will give you the confidence and fortitude to weather any storm or other natural disaster that may interrupt your life at any time, no matter where you live. Familiarize yourself with important evacuation procedures, and learn essential life skills, like how to draw water from a well by hand, how to split firewood, and how to cook rice and other foods (such as succulent local chicken!) over an open fire. The theme may be serious, but the experience itself is an enjoyable one, and will prove to you that no matter how difficult life can sometimes be, it is always filled with precious shared moments, and small, unexpected comforts.
