YOUR HOST

Shinya KUBO

Hi, my name is Shinya Kubo, and before I became a fisherman, I was an architect and designer. After the Tohoku earthquake in 2011, wakame production became an important part of rebuilding our lives and livelihoods in Kamaishi. By applying my knowledge of swimming pool and water circulation system design, I’ve been able to create a new and efficient style of salting tank which I believe helps to boost production. Most people who come to the experience, even from quite far away, always want to return again, which pleases me. We have made many friends who have become family to us now in this way, and it’s lovely to work with young people in particular. It’s also delightful to see how amazed people become, both young and old, by how the wakame turns from brown to a brilliant green during the processing, essentially turning it from a harvested crop to a familiar food, right before their eyes. I think a lot of folks think that if they’ve had no experience before, they’ll not be of much use, but nothing could be further from the truth!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Do you love the sea? Do you love wakame? Work with real fishermen in this authentic “apprentice” experience! Ride out in the boat to harvest seaweed and cut the precious thick, spiral-shaped “mekabu” from the rocks (it can be tricky, but so much fun, too!), then back to shore to boil, chill, and salt it, ready for market. No prior experience necessary!! You’ll feel pleasantly alive — and tired — after you make the day’s wakame, and your lunch, with fresh additions from the sea (ikaru, abalone, and of course mekabu), will be a welcome and warm experience with the joy of shared labor and wonderful stories between new friends. The Kubo family will welcome you with so much kindness, leaving you happy and satisfied, with a fascinating insight into wakame production, and with a belly full of the sea’s bounty!
