Hello, my name is Kikuchi and I am a conductor on the Sanriku Railway, located in the northeast part of mainland Japan, Iwate Prefecture. The Sanriku Line is well known and beloved by not only locals but also trains enthusiasts all over Japan. We run along the coast and are privy to some truly beautiful views of the Pacific seaside. The Sanriku Line is not the grandest train line in Japan, in fact we only have one track, but we make up for it with heart and character. After the 2011 earthquake, we were put out of commission for a few years, but we got “back on track” by 2014 with a little help from our friends. We even got support from countries like Kuwait to help us in the restoration effort of the line.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Do you love trains? Ever wonder what it would be like to explore a train yard? Do you fantasize about getting your hands on a sponge and scrubbing down a train car?! Join the host, a conductor on the beautiful Sanriku line, to a get a backstage view of this popular railway. The experience last for about four and a half hours, during which you will have a tour of the train yard, learn about the railway, experience what it’s like to become a conductor, enjoy a “eki-ben” bento box lunch, and get really up close and personal with the train cars by washing them down.
