YOUR HOST

Chiyoko SOGA

Hello, my name is Chieko Soga. I love to go for drives in my free time, I love my work, but most of all I love my town, and I want to share with visitors what my town is all about; that’s why I started this workshops. I have been working with bamboo and bamboo groves for 10 years now. About 2 years ago I started serving “Nagashi Soumen”, which, if you’ve never tried, is a unique and interesting experience: noodles flow down a bamboo half tube, and you pluck them out with chopsticks. In this workshop, I want visitors to enjoy the beautiful environment and refreshing atmosphere of a bamboo grove.

This experience was unique from the very beginning. I think it is definitely far away from the normal activities you can find in terms of activities held by host families. As being the main topic bamboo and all the great things you can do with it. It was really enjoyable, to learn from a family that have the knowledge about it. From the beginning , it is great to see yourself immerse into a bamboo forest. In this place, you can see that the host family already created a great space to start the day activities. This time, our goal was to prepare "nagashi soumen" , but in this occasion it was from the very beginning. And that's the reason why, in every sense bamboo takes an important role. Starting from the selection of a good bamboo three, and then how we should get it from the forest. That bamboo tree will not be only used as our soumen canal. We took complete advantage of the bamboo three, learning from the host family how to make our own plates and bowls. All these elements, were used for the second part of this experience. In which we helped a little bit to prepare tempura with some bamboo shoot, that we also collected from the bamboo forest. As the final part of the day, we enjoy nagashi soumen. It was a really great opportunity to learn more about bamboo and all what you can get from it, visit a great natural place in the south part of Kyoto and last but not least, the most important is the great chance to meet a super friendly Japanese family that is so passionate about what bamboo is offering as part of the natural resources of Japan.
