YOUR HOST
Megumi SATO
Hello, my name is Megumi Sato. As I grew up eating delicious vegetables made by my father from a young age, I found myself delighted by the taste of the delicious ingredients. My lifelong love and study of cooking (and eating) started with this joy.
I studied as a dietician at Hattori Nutrition College, and I’ve worked in the confectionery field and as an assistant at a vocational culinary school for many years. For the past 30 years, I’ve also helped the Tokyo YWCA by cooking fresh, traditional meals in the kitchen of the log cabin during their camping trips. It’s very enjoyable to go out to the local farms, talk with the farmers and gather fresh ingredients for meals.
In my classes, we never use chemicals or pre-made, store-bought ingredients — everything is prepared from scratch. I want people to come away with a connection to their food, and the deeply joyful realization that, “Surprise! Cooking is easy and fun!”
WHAT TO EXPECT
If you aren’t familiar with these classic Japanese bakery best-sellers, you’re in for a treat! “Melon bread” (メロンパン/meron pan) combines a light and fluffy bread filling with a cookie-crust exterior to create a sweet melon-shaped bun. Whereas “curry bread” (カレーパン/kare pan) is a savory favorite consisting of delicious Japanese-style curry wrapped in fluffy dough, covered in breadcrumbs and deep fried. Teaching you how to cook these popular breads will be your friendly host, Megumi Sato. With years of experience as a cooking instructor (just ask to see her book), even beginners will find her lesson easy to follow. As a frequent traveller, Megumi knows it can be difficult to find the ingredients you want in other countries, and has tips on hand to help you recreate the recipes back home. At the end of the lesson you’ll have the chance to tuck into your freshly baked breads and swap stories with your host. (You can take them home, too!) This highly requested cooking class is the first of its kind in Japan and we promise you will want to bake these delicious breads again and again!

Awesome class
This class was so awesome. From flour to bread and raw beef to curry filling, you learn everything. The class was pretty organized; we started off prepping the dough to proof for both the curry bread and melon bread simultaneously and then worked on the curry filling and melon bread topping next and then put everything together to cook/bake.
Roland was our translator, and super helpful in translating everything we had to ask the host and we were able to learn more about Japanese culture beyond breadmaking.
Sidenote, if you're interested, and I'd definitely recommend this class, sign up early as this class fills up quick since the classes are kept small :DSee moreSee less
