I’ve been attracted to fine art for most of my life after a life-changing experience I had in high school at an exhibition. That was a turning point for me. I learned to appreciate art and realized how wonderful it is in addition to the immense potential that it holds to move people. This led to my ambition to become employed at a museum. During my university years I pursued this dream, studying art and art history from all around the world while zeroing in on Japanese paintings as my major focus of study. I eventually achieved my goal and was employed at a museum, coming in contact and handling precious works of art. I have since retired but my passion for Japanese art lives on. It is for this reason that I would like to introduce others the wonderful world of Japanese art and begin helping others to appreciate such paintings.

This two-and-a-half-hour tour is perfect for anyone interested in Japanese art, but who may be apprehensive about where and how to begin learning. Taking place in the grand Tokyo National Museum, your guide will lead you on an exciting journey exploring both levels of the museum, covering exquisite art spanning from the Jomon period to the Edo period. Learn how to appreciate diverse yet equally compelling Japanese art forms such as Ukiyoe (woodblock prints), Buddhist motifs, hanging scrolls, ink wash paintings, folding screens, lacquerware, and swords and armor. The guide does not simply explain the art, but rather takes a different approach by giving you the key points on what to look for, thus allowing you to not only understand the art, but also appreciate it at a deeper level. Pieces that may seem less than exciting come alive after gaining the correct lens with which to view them, and it is here where the real pleasure of art appreciation begins. Be prepared to emerge from this tour with a heightened regard for Japanese aesthetics!
