My name is Mitori Takahashi. I was born in Hiroshima and raised in Kanagawa. When I was still in school, studying Japanese dance, I became very familiar with Japanese cotton kimono “Yukata” and admired how all the mothers had a lot of knowledge about them. I completed a course in kimono, but couldn’t find any commercially available banding to suit the style, so I made my own! At that time, purely by chance, I came across some multicolored tsukui cord from Sagamihara. I made a variety of small braided items, and began to feel the possibilities for the kinds of beautiful geometric patterns that could be created easily, by hand.

This course provides you with an introduction to traditional Japanese braiding skills and an understanding of the culture of yukata-wearing (traditional and modern), right in Kanagawa! Your host will show you how to wear yukata (hire one at the course, or bring your own), and teach you techniques for creating your own beautiful sash cords. Using just your hands and tsukui cords, you will learn to create any number of lovely gifts or accessories — a freeing and creative experience that provides you with a unique life-skill that can be practiced anywhere, no special tools needed.
